Missing teeth is a prevalent problem in the United States. According to the American Dental Association, adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have 3 or more missing teeth on average.

More than just a cosmetic problem, missing one or multiple teeth can have serious implications on an individual’s oral and general health. It can cause issues such as pain while chewing, jaw irregularities and loss of jaw bone. Moreover, studies have revealed that edentulism, or complete tooth loss, can produce anatomical changes that may impair upper airway function, and result in potentially serious sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea.
Fortunately, thanks to the advent of innovative cosmetic dentistry techniques, there are now solutions for restoring your smile, with dental bridges being one of the most popular and effective ones.

What is a Dental Bridge?

The empty gap left behind by a missing tooth can cause the other teeth to become loose and weak over time. Essentially an artificial tooth, a dental bridge is used to fill in the empty space. It effectively restores the tooth while providing a natural appearance. When it comes to dental bridges, there are various types available. These include:

The Dental Bridge Placement Procedure

Prior to the placement procedure, the dentist will take the imprints of the patient’s mouth because dental bridges are custom made and need to fit perfectly to perform best. The patient can also be fitted with a temporary crown if their teeth are seriously compromised. When the permanent bridges are ready to be placed, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the surrounding gum area. Then they will proceed to cleaning the underlying teeth and removing temporary crowns (if any). The final step is to fix the dental bridge on the abutment teeth and cementing it in place. It’s important to note that dental bridge placement is not a surgical process, and the patient will be awake throughout the procedure.
