Scaling and Root Planing Palmdale

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing palmdale are used to remove tartar and plaque with the aim of reducing the likelihood of gingivitis. The procedure is not surgical and is essentially a more intensive method for cleaning teeth.

At Boulevard Dental, Dr Gobrial performs this procedure.

The Scaling and Root Planing Procedures

First, Dr. Gobrial will examine your mouth and take x-rays to gain an overview of your dental health. The state of your teeth and gums will determine whether you will require scaling and root planing.

Gum health, tartar, pocket depth and periodontitis progression are all factors in making the correct recommendation for scaling and root planing procedures.

You may require local anesthesia before the procedures, depending on the severity of your condition.

Dental Scaling

Dental scaling is a process used to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. Deposits are often found just beneath the gum line, so Dr. Gobrial takes particular care in these areas.

Where there is a lot of hardened plaque, an ultrasonic scaling tool is used to clean the tooth. Afterwards, Dr. Gobrial may also use oral irrigation below the gum line to decrease the amount of bacteria in the mouth.

Root Planing

Root planing smooths the surface of the roots to remove surface dentin and cementum compromised by tartar and toxins. Dr. Gobrial uses root planing to facilitate healthy tissue growth and to prevent bacterial colonizing the area and causing problems later on.

Antibiotic Therapy

Where there is a lot of oral bacteria, Dr. Gobrial may prescribe antimicrobial mouth rinses or even antibiotics. This will reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth and should prevent further issues.

Antibiotic fiber therapy is another option. This treatment delivers antibiotics directly to the periodontal pocket where the bacteria have settled. The treatment promotes healing and controls infections.

Treating Deep Periodontal Pockets

Deep periodontal pockets can create perfect locations for bacteria to settle. When the pockets are very deep, removing tartar and plaque gets much harder. In this case, Dr. Gobrial will suggest surgery to treat the problem.

Treatment Benefits

Scaling and root planing treatments are beneficial in many ways.

Oral bacteria can cause a wide range of problems from tooth decay to heart disease or respiratory disease. This is why it is important to treat oral bacteria as quickly as possible. Scaling and root planing is the first step in treating oral bacteria and preventing periodontal infection.

Scaling and root planing palmdale is also a good way to prevent future tooth loss. If you have gum pockets deeper than 3mm, you may benefit from scaling and planing to reduce the opportunity for bacteria to colonize here. Without treatment, these pockets may get bigger and present a serious risk to your health.

Finally, scaling and root planing palmdale can help to improve your breath and the appearance of your teeth. The bacteria and food particles that cause the bad breath are removed and any superficial stains are removed. This gives you the beautiful smile you have always wanted.
